Hey — Studio Edition
Demos in Freefall for Development. This is a working version of Hey, not a finished master. It still needs some rearranging and a proper remix. But that’s the point of Studio Edition: you’re hearing the music as it develops, not just when it’s finished. You’re getting it early, while it’s alive.
How it started
The original challenge was simple: write an instrumental in under an hour. I opened Ableton Live, put together a handful of tracks — drums, bass, guitars and a jammed guitar solo — and recorded the screen as I worked.
I later cut that screen recording together in DaVinci Resolve, speeding some bits up, slowing others down and adding titles. No voice-over; just the music taking shape.
Then came the vocal
The track sat around for roughly a year. One day, with a microphone in front of me, I sang a vocal almost on impulse. That spontaneous take is the vocal you hear here.
Making the video
When I decided to put Hey on YouTube, I wanted more than a static visualiser. I started with royalty-free footage, edited it in DaVinci Resolve and developed the hand-and-sea opening with some AI-assisted animation.
Studio Log
Current edition: Early working mix and arrangement. The guitar solo and vocal are in place, but the song is still open to change.
Next: Revisit the arrangement and remix. I’d also like to share more of the original Ableton-making-of footage if I can recover it.
Studio Edition is a window into the process — the good, the bad and the ugly.
